In the title compound, C(21)H(16)O(4), the dihedral angle between the phenyl ring and the 2H-chromene ring system is 59.8 (2)°. The crystal packing is stabilized by weak π-π stacking inter-actions [centroid-centroid distances = 3.667 (2) Å] and inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions.

A short and high yielding route for the preparation of the title compound, starting from commercially available 1,5-dihydroxynaphthalene, is described. The key step in the sequence is the air oxidation of a bis(trimethylsilyloxy)diene precursor.

7,9-Dichloro-6H,12H-indolo[2,1-b]quinazoline-6,12-dione

There are two independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(15)H(6)Cl(2)N(2)O(2). The conjugated four-ring system is essentially planar in each mol-ecule [maximum deviation = 0.089 (2) Å]. In the crystal, weak inter-molecular C-H⋯Cl, C-H⋯O and C-H⋯·N inter-actions help to stabilize the packing.
